Monday
Objective:
  1. Understand Andrew Jackson's philosophy of government and his impact on the office of the presidency.
  2. Understand the debate among historians about the meaning of "Jacksonian Democracy," and Andrew Jackson's relationship to it.
Class discussion: A thorough discussion of Jackson as President.

Homework for Tuesday
Read pp. 240 - 244
Supplemental Reading: Wester's Reply to Senator Hayne (Read & answer questions)

Tuesday
Objective:
Understand the nullification theory of John C. Calhoun, and President Jackson's reaction to the attempt to put nullification into action.

Homework for Wednesday
Read pp. 244-248

Wednesday
Objective: Understand A. Jackson's Indian policy and to see both pros and cons (pros?).

Class discussion: Identify problems facing both whites and Indians on the American frontier.

Homework for Thursday
Bring you supplemental reading to class. Since I'll will not be in class, you'll be required to read your book during class and answer questions on a handout you will be given.

Homework for Friday
Read pp. 248-259 (a lot of reading!)

Thursday
SSR (remember those initials from elementary school? "Silent Sustained Reading") and write a short summary of what you've read and your progress to date.

Friday
Objective:
  • Understand Jackson's objections to the BUS and why Biddle was the champion of the BUS.
  • With Jackson bowing out, understand Martin Van Buren's/W. H. Harrison's/J. Tyler's accomplishments and failures as president.

Class Discussion: Much discussion on Jackson, Van Buren & "Tippecanoe and Tyler Too."
