April 16th -- 20th: Class Schedule, Objectives, Homework, Etc.

Monday, 4/16
Objectives:

  • Review last week's objectives by checking for understanding / comprehension.
  • Understand the importance of the Lincoln - Douglas Debates and the Freeport Doctrine by looking at excerpts from the transcripts of that debate.


Continue watching Ken Burns', "The Cause: 1861"

Understand the significance of the election of 1860 by listing the effects it had on the nation as a whole.

Homework:
Write the introductory paragraph to your DBQ;

Tuesday
Hand in Introductory paragraph to the DBQ.

Objective:
Introduce next chapter (14, The Civil War)

Homework:
Create a list of differences between the North and the South in terms of:

  • Population
  • Miles of Railroads
  • Economy
  • Etcetera... Union advantages vs. Southern advantages

Read section 1, The Secession Crisis, pp. 371-375

Wednesday
Objective:
Understand the differences between the North and the South on the eve of the Civil War.
Review the cause(s) of the Civil War.

Homework:
Divide up sections 2 and 3 between the class and have present each of the sections explaining the mobilization of the North compared to the mobilization of the South
pp. 375-383 & pp. 383-388

Thursday
Objective:
In what ways did the South and the North mobilize and what unique challenges did each have to overcome in meeting these goals.

Groups meet and organize their materials.

Homework:
Read section 3, pp. 383-388
